California Pivotal Practice Award Honors Los Angeles Unified Schools
Award Replaces California Distinguished Schools Program and Celebrates Innovative Practices During Pandemic
Los Angeles, CA (April 26, 2022) – State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond today announced the winners of the newly created 2022 California Pivotal Practice (CAPP) Award Program. Replacing the California Distinguished Schools Program for one year, the new award celebrates schools that implemented an innovative practice during the 2020-21 school year, when the state required schools to offer distance learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
More than 50 Los Angeles Unified Schools were honored for excellence in four target areas: student engagement, technology distribution, nutrition services and social and emotional well-being of students.
“Congratulations to our schools recognized by the state for their extraordinary hard work and response to the challenges of continuing instruction during the pandemic,” Los Angeles Unified Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho said.
“Congratulations to the Los Angeles Unified recipients of the CAPP Award, especially Alta California and Panorama High School in Board District 6,” Board President Kelly Gonez said. “The 2020-21 school year brought unprecedented challenges for our students and our schools. I’m proud of the work that our schools have done to overcome those challenges and serve our students so well.”
“Congratulations to all fifty-six of LA Unified’s school communities, including Palisades Elementary in Board District 4, on this well-deserved recognition of their innovative practices amid an unprecedented crisis,” Board Vice President Nick Melvoin said. “As we have learned throughout the pandemic, there is no true substitute for in-person learning. We are proud of all the school communities that went above and beyond to support students and we will continue to prioritize the safe return to normalcy and path to recovery for our kids.”
“The tough jobs that teachers, principals and all school staff are asked to perform worsened exponentially during COVID-19,” Board Member Dr. George J. McKenna III said. “The new California Pivotal Practice Award honors some very remarkable efforts on our campuses. I would like to congratulate Dr. James Edward Jones Primary Center, La Salle Avenue Dual Language Two-Way Immersion Spanish Elementary School and Manchester Avenue Elementary School in Board District 1 and the more than 50 additional Los Angeles Unified Schools that are recognized by the California Department of Education.”
“Thank you State Superintendent for recognizing the greatness at Los Angeles Unified,” Board Member Mónica García said. “We know everybody is working really hard and every one of our schools has demonstrated excellence by staying open and providing instruction through such difficult times. Bravo Los Angeles Unified!”
“Congratulations to the schools in Board District 3, and throughout Los Angeles Unified, that implemented innovative practices, took advantage of technology and made progress closing the achievement gap during a time when the challenges of the pandemic made it so difficult for students to stay focused on learning and take advantage of academic opportunities,” Board Member Scott M. Schmerelson said. “I thank the teachers and staff in our schools for their dedication and extraordinary work. We have amazing talent in our district and with increased social, emotional supports and funding, I am confident that our students will be prepared and stronger going forward.”
“We all had to step up at Los Angeles Unified during COVID-19 to make sure students could continue to learn despite the obstacles,” Board Member Jackie Goldberg said. “Thank you State Superintendent Tony Thurmond for the new 2022 California Pivotal Practice (CAPP) Awards Program, and for recognizing more than 50 of our schools.”
“The California Pivotal Practice Award acknowledges the hard work of our school community regardless of the drastic changes we had to make during the pandemic,” Board Member Tanya Ortiz Franklin said. “While distance learning might not have been the ideal option for student learning, I am grateful that our schools were able to find innovative ways to support students, educators, and families during unprecedented times. Our staff and educators were able to collaborate together to help our students achieve in creative ways.”
