Statement from Los Angeles Unified Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho on Governor Gavin Newsom’s Proposed 2024-25 State Budget
Los Angeles, CA (Jan. 10, 2024) – On behalf of Los Angeles Unified – our students, employees, and the families we serve – we thank Governor Gavin Newsom for proposing a state budget that protects school funding and continues the course of implementing recent initiatives such as Universal Transitional Kindergarten and universal school meals. Our students deserve every possible investment to create a strong foundation in their academic journey, and we need to remain committed to fulfilling the well-deserved pay and benefit agreements our workforce has earned.
The revised 2024-25 cost-of-living-adjustment is significantly lower than currently reflected in Los Angeles Unified’s multi-year projection, which will make it more challenging as school districts transition away from the one-time COVID-relief federal funding that sunsets in September 2024. However, Los Angeles Unified will continue to manage this transition in a manner that both maintains its fiscal health and provides for the needs of our students.
We look forward to working with Governor Newsom and the Legislature to implement fiscal solutions that recognize varying economic realities across the state such as cost of living and inflation, and minimize the impact and disruption to our school communities.
