Board Member Mónica García’s Statement on DACA ruling
Today, the Supreme Court rejected the Trump administration's attempt to dismantle the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, reaffirming that Dreamers are #HereToStay.
We want to recognize and thank the over 800,000 youth who courageously taught us the strength of vulnerability. It was the youth who tirelessly expressed their outrage, pain and sorrow while demonstrating their great power and voice. It was the youths' 20 years of persistent organizing that preceded this movement. To all undocumented youth: We hear you, we see you, we love you.
We applaud and stand in solidarity with the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold DACA. #WeAreOne – Los Angeles Unified School District stood with our immigrant students and families over and over again, and we continue to do so today. We are not confused about every child's right to be in school, and we will continue to build a Los Angeles Unified where our families can be undocumented and unafraid.
DACA recipients are present in every classroom. They are our students, parents, employees and leaders; the struggle does not end here. Let us own up to the responsibility of fighting the current and future challenges, creating systematic changes for racial justice, addressing the broken immigration system and calling for full immigration reform.
