Deeds, Not Words
Juneteenth marks the end of slavery and the beginning of our country’s long journey to a more equal and just society. We still have a long way to go in that journey.
On this day we remember the events in Texas as it became the last state to recognize the Emancipation Proclamation, years after it was signed and months after the Civil War ended. This day serves as a reminder of how long it took for law of the land to be understood. The need for more understanding continues.
In Los Angeles Unified, we don’t have all of the answers but we are committed to making change. Progress is measured in deeds, not words and it will be the actions we take now that future generations will hold us accountable for.

Juneteenth marca el fin de la esclavitud y el comienzo del largo trayecto de nuestro país hacia una sociedad más justa y equitativa. Todavía tenemos un largo camino por recorrer.
En este día recordamos los acontecimientos en Texas, ya que se convirtió en el último estado en reconocer la Proclamación de Emancipación, años después de que se firmara, y meses después de que terminara la Guerra Civil. Este día sirve como un recordatorio de cuánto tiempo demoró en entenderse la ley de la nación. Continúa la necesidad de más comprensión.
En el Distrito Unificado de Los Ángeles no tenemos todas las respuestas, pero estamos comprometidos a efectuar el cambio. El progreso se mide en hechos, no en palabras, y serán las acciones que tomemos ahora por las que rendiremos cuentas a las generaciones futuras.
