October Proclaimed National Principals Month by the Los Angeles School Board of Education
Los Angeles (October 17, 2023) – Los Angeles Unified Board Vice President, Scott M. Schmerelson, has sponsored a resolution dedicating the Month of October as National Principals Month with unanimous co-sponsorship from his colleagues on the board.
The resolution recognizes National Principals Month during the month of October within the District, recognizing the importance of principals as administrators and community leaders who help their staff and students reach their full potential.
“As both a former teacher and principal, I have stood in the shoes of the brilliant administrative staff that oversees entire schools,” said Board Vice President Scott M. Schmerelson. “Our principals are more than administrators. They are leaders in their respective communities, serving students, staff, and parents. At Los Angeles Unified, we aim for principals to feel heard and valued by showing our solidarity with them.”
“This month, we recognize the incredible work of each and every principal across the District,” said Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho. “The steadfast commitment of our school leaders and their meaningful connections with our students and families makes Los Angeles Unified the district of choice. We are incredibly grateful for their hard work and dedication.”
“Being a principal was the position that I have loved most in all of my years as an educator,” said Board Member Dr. George McKenna III. “I also believe it is the most significant and impactful role in a child’s education because principals have the responsibility to determine the educators that are in our classrooms. We celebrate and appreciate the important work that our principals do to lead our schools every single day.”
“Our principals are essential connectors between parents and the District,” said Board Member Dr. Rocío Rivas. “Principals get things done, from basic operations to enrichment programs on our campuses, from gardens to after-school clubs. An open door to the principal's office can make all the difference for a school, from student wellness to community support.”
“I’m proud to co-sponsor this resolution celebrating National Principals Month,” said Board Member Nick Melvoin. “Although one month isn’t nearly enough time to encapsulate our gratitude for the work our school leaders do year round, it is important to recognize the dedication, effort, and flexibility that keeps our school communities running smoothly—an especially huge feat over the past few years.”
“Every day our principals give their all to ensure our students are learning and growing,” said Board Member Kelly Gonez. “We are proud to celebrate National Principals Month to recognize their ongoing leadership and the difference they make in the lives of students and families throughout the school year.”
“Today and every day we celebrate the leadership of our principals. We recognize our campus leaders for their dedication in cultivating an environment where student learning flourishes and inclusive culture thrives,” said Board Member Tanya Ortiz Franklin. “Your shining example not only creates the conditions for our scholars and staff to reach their full potential, but also has the power to inspire the change we wish to see in our world.”
“My fellow students and I are thrilled to celebrate our school leaders,” said Student Board Member Karen Ramirez. “My school principals have become trailblazers for our community, a characteristic I am certain our Los Angeles Unified principals exhibit. It is necessary to remind our principals that their work does not go unseen. As students, we experience the direct impact of their hard work. Thank you for all you do!”
