Substitute Educators are Celebrated in Los Angeles Unified School District
Los Angeles (Nov. 14, 2023) - Today, Board Vice President Scott M. Schmerelson introduced a resolution recognizing substitute educators in Los Angeles, with co-sponsorship from Board Members Goldberg and Gonez, and passed unanimously.
The resolution recognizes the hard work and dedication of substitute educators, who sometimes face changing circumstances and little notice but fulfill their duties in supporting teachers and students around the District. It calls on the Superintendent to provide the same professional development training district staff receives for all substitute educators.
“We want substitute educators to know that we think highly of them,” said Board Vice President Scott M. Schmerelson. “Substitute teachers ensure that, whatever the situation, there will be quality educators ready to take over and support students. This is why we are making investments to ensure that these educators get the same training and support as all other Los Angeles Unified educators.”
“Substitute teachers serve a critical role in ensuring our students continue to receive the education they deserve,” said Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho. “We thank our substitute educators for their willingness to serve and educate our students at a moment’s notice.”
“All of us who have been educators have a unique appreciation for substitute teachers: we rely on these professionals to jump in wherever and whenever needed,” said Board President Jackie Goldberg. “During the pandemic, everyone had a chance to see the value of substitute teachers up close and personal. We salute you and stand with you!”
“Substitute educators are absolutely essential in keeping our schools open, and our students moving forward with curriculum no matter what,” said Board Member Dr. Rocío Rivas. “I look forward to celebrating Substitute Educators Day formally as a District.”
“Substitute educators play an important role in maintaining day-to-day operations of educating our students, ensuring continuity when their regular teacher is absent,” said Board Member Dr. George J. McKenna III. “They are well-rounded educators, experienced with educating students in various grades and classes, and are vital to all schools.”
“We are grateful for the talented and dynamic substitute teachers who play an essential role in ensuring the continuity of our kids’ education,” said Board Member Nick Melvoin. “While the tireless efforts and incredible flexibility of our substitutes can often go unnoticed, we are proud to recognize their hard work and commit to supporting their growth and success in our school communities.”
“Every day across our schools, our amazing substitute educators are providing support to our students to ensure they don’t miss a day of learning,” said Board Member Kelly Gonez. “Substitute Educators’ Day is our opportunity to express our sincere gratitude for our substitutes and their ongoing commitment to our students and families.”
“As we celebrate Substitute Educators Day, I am grateful to our substitute teachers for their ongoing commitment to our students during teacher absences, ensuring our students have a smooth and uninterrupted learning experience,” Board Member Tanya Ortiz Franklin said. “I also want to express deep gratitude to our resident substitutes at priority of schools this year for helping make an impact in our students' daily education.”
“I am excited to recognize all of our amazing substitute teachers who always step up to ensure continuity of learning when our teachers are not in the classroom,” said Student Board Member Karen Ramirez. “Students see the hard work they put to assist us in our education. They are crucial to our success. My fellow students and I thank you for your hard work and dedication!”
