Jackie Goldberg Re-elected President to the Board of Education

Scott M. Schmerelson Re-elected Vice President

Los Angeles, CA (Dec. 12, 2023) – Today Jackie Goldberg was re-elected as President of the Board of Education and Scott M. Schmerelson was re-elected as Vice President.

“I appreciate the support of my colleagues on the Board of Education,” Board President Goldberg said. “It is an honor to represent the Board alongside Vice President Schmerelson.”

“It has been my privilege to serve the students and families of this District as a teacher, City Councilmember, Assemblymember, and during two separate stints on the Board of Education. As I begin my last year as Board President and, indeed, as an elected official, I am mindful of all that we have accomplished and all the work we have ahead of us. We are working every day to bring attendance to pre-pandemic levels, to improve all students’ literacy and math skills, and to make good on our commitment to special education, social emotional learning, and so much more."

“As a result of the pandemic, we finally saw what happens when we adequately fund public education: smaller class sizes, additional mental health support, and innovative programs to help struggling students. Tragically, this year we are losing millions in supplemental funding. That is why the long-term solution is structural change—at the Federal and State level—to adequately tax corporations and the wealthy so that we can fully fund our schools.”

“I am looking forward to another year of notable achievements alongside Board President Jackie Goldberg and Board Vice President Scott M. Schmerelson,” Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho said. “Their commitment to public education is unparalleled, and I know they will continue in the legacy of leaders who have guided this board.”

Ms. Goldberg began her career as a teacher in Compton in the late 1960’s where she created an effective reading improvement program that dramatically increased reading scores within three years. This year also marks Ms. Goldberg’s final year in elected office.
