L.A. School Board Celebrates Computer Science Education Week
LOS ANGELES, December 10, 2024 – The Los Angeles Unified Board of Education today recognized Computer Science Education Week, which occurs from December 9 to December 15. The resolution, authored by Board Member Kelly Gonez, highlighted the importance of access to computer science education in our public schools and called for updates from District leadership on the work to date to empower learners and equitably expand access to computer science coursework.
“In 2024, it’s more important than ever that our students are graduating prepared for cutting edge careers that not just use technological and digital tools but create those tools,” said Board Member Kelly Gonez. “This Computer Science Education Week, we are encouraging our District to expand access to computer science and for all schools to find ways to incorporate this kind of learning into this week and throughout the school year.”
"As a school system, we have a duty to ensure that every student is prepared for the future with the skills and opportunities they need to thrive," said Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho. "By expanding access to computer science education, we are not only bridging equity gaps but also empowering our students to step confidently into high-demand careers and leadership roles in an increasingly digital world. Los Angeles Unified remains committed to creating pathways that inspire innovation and success for all learners.”
“California leads the way in technological innovation around the world, and we must take advantage of the resources available to our students,” said Board President Scott M. Schmerelson. “However, we must think about accessibility so that there are no opportunity gaps between some students and others. Supporting this resolution would help our students and our state be ready for the next step in technological advancements.”
“Expanding access to computer science education ensures that every student in LAUSD is equipped with the tools they need to succeed in a technology-driven world,” said Vice President Dr. Rocío Rivas. “By celebrating this progress, we reaffirm our commitment to creating a future where innovation and opportunity are accessible to all.”
“It is important to recognize Computer Science Education Week in LAUSD,” said Board Member Sherlett Hendy Newbill. “Our students are the future, and it is vital that we expand access to technology and computer science education for all of our students, especially those that are often underrepresented in the field, such as girls and minorities.”
“Students need to be able to use technology—it is a part of life,” said Board Member Nick Melvoin. “As we work to ensure all kids have access to computer science education, I hope we also spend time examining the right balance of screen time to support both their learning and overall wellbeing.”
“In our technologically advanced world, computer science training is essential for preparing students for future success,” said Board Member Karla Griego.
"By celebrating Computer Science Education Week and the power of coding, technology, and skills for the digital world, we inspire students to sharpen their critical thinking, unleash their creativity, and solve complex problems—skills vital for our future," Board Member Tanya Ortiz Franklin said. "This resolution ensures equitable access to computer science and coding education, bridging opportunity gaps and empowering students in underrepresented communities with the tools they need to excel and lead."
