Frida Kahlo, born July 6, 1907 in Coyoacan, Mexico, is a renowned Mexican painter who has been an ambassador of Mexican art and culture. Kahlo is known for the complexity and depth of her experience through a succession of self-portraits and portraits. She suffered lifelong health problems; many of which resulted from a traffic accident during her teenage years. Kahlo married famous Mexican artist Diego Rivera. Kahlo’s work has been celebrated in Mexico as emblematic of national and indigenous tradition and by feminists for its uncompromising depiction of the female experience and form.
