Miguel Contreras, born September 17, 1952 in Dinuba, California, was an American labor union leader. His parents were farm workers who emigrated from Mexico during the 1920’s. After meeting Cesar E. Chavez at a rally for Robert F. Kennedy in the late 1960’s, Contreras became an activist for the farm workers union. He organized one of the largest immigrant’s rights rallies in U.S. history, which drew nearly 20,000 people to the Los Angeles sports arena. In 1994, Contreras became political director of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor. As Secretary-Treasurer, Contreras reached out to immigrant workers and worked to integrate his union into the Los Angeles political landscape. Contreras served in this position until his death on May 6, 2005.
