Statement from Board President Kelly Gonez on the Passage of the Resolution Remembering the Armenian Genocide

“This year marks the 107th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, and I’m proud that the Los Angeles School Board unanimously voted today to recognize the genocide and uplift the stories of the Armenian community. We honor the lives of the over 1.5 million Armenians who died, the survivors who lost everything, and their families who still carry the weight of the shared ancestral trauma of the world’s first modern genocide.

More than 100 years after the genocide, it remains important to remember it, to acknowledge what happened as genocide, and to teach our students about their history and the history of their peers. We are at our best as a school system when we teach our diverse cultural histories and promote tolerance across lines of difference.

As we witness the heartbreaking attacks on the Ukrainian people, it’s a heavy reminder to all of us that we must never forget the unconscionable tragedies of the past to ensure that they never repeat again.”
